Blaine Gaffney to Contest Sligo – Leitrim Fine Gael Convention

Blaine Gaffney to Contest Sligo – Leitrim Fine Gael Convention

Blaine Gaffney, a Sligo Fine Gael Area Representative has announced publicly today that he will be putting his name forward to contest the ‘Sligo – Leitrim’ Fine Gael Constituency Convention having secured the nomination to do so from a number of Fine Gael branches in Co. Sligo this week.

This announcement follows the decision last week by sitting Fine Gael TD, Tony McLoughlin to retire from politics at the end of the 32nd Dáil.

Gaffney said that “I have decided to announce publicly today my intentions to go forward to the convention in Sligo on 19th of July and attempt to win the Sligo Fine Gael nomination in order to contest the next General Election for the party.

“In all honestly, I had been looking towards first contesting the Local Elections for the party in 2019 before contemplating this approach. However, as Fine Gael headquarters have moved the date of the convention forward to July 2018, and with Deputy McLoughlin surprisingly announcing his intentions to retire, I have been encouraged by my supporters, my family and indeed a number of senior politicians within the party to put my name forward at this time.

“I am excited about the challenge that lies ahead.

“From working first at the European Parliament with Mairead McGuinness MEP and subsequently in Leinster House with Deputy McLoughlin, I have built up a deep understanding of the political system.

“I know my way around national politics, I know the key players and I know exactly what it takes to get things done”.

Gaffney was appointed as ‘Local Area Representative’ for Sligo by the National Executive of the Fine Gael Party in 2015 in an attempt to maintain the parties representation in Sligo town following the 2014 Local Election collapse and he has been active on a number of political campaigns and issues in Sligo and Leitrim ever since, including the children rights referendum, the marriage equality referendum and the campaign to ban fracking in Ireland.

He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Irish Politics from Queens University Belfast in 2013 and was subsequently appointed as a Peace Commissioner for Sligo by the Minister for Justice, Fracnes Fitzgerald in 2015.

“Winning the party nomination at convention will be difficult. However, I am very confident in my own abilities and I feel that as there is a real hunger for new blood in national politics, to go along with the new social changes we have experienced over the last few years, that the members of Fine Gael will now look to promote youth and promote a candidate that has the drive, the work ethic and the experience politically to be able to step up to the mark now and deliver for the people of this constituency.

“We have new and youthful leadership in Fine Gael under An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar currently, and I hope to be able to add a young, enthusiastic and positive voice to his team in the 33rd Dáil” concluded Gaffney.
