Blaine Gaffney here, I am a 29 year old Sligo man who is contesting the ‘2019 Local Elections’ in the ‘Sligo - Strandhill’ Electoral District.
For those of you who don’t know me, I am just an ordinary young hardworking person who is passionate about seeing my hometown grow and improve as we go forward and I want to be someone who takes a lead in this approach.
I am the youngest son of Declan and Mary Gaffney from Sligo. My dad served in the Irish Defence Forces for 25 years and my mum currently works at the front desk of a local hotel in Sligo town. I have one older brother, Trevor who currently runs an equestrian business in the USA with his wife Jill.
Families often have their differences, and believe me we were no different. But despite the difficulties, I am very proud of my families working class background and of our achievements from humble beginnings. In May 2017, I married Danielle Kelly at the Sligo Cathedral. We live together in Sligo presently.
I attended Summerhill College in Sligo town from 2001-2008, before undertaking a PLC course in 2008 as my Leaving Cert was not what I would have hoped for. Despite this, I went onto graduate from Queens University Belfast in 2013 with a Masters of Arts Degree (MA) in Irish Politics. Prior to studying at Queens, I obtained a First Class Honours (1.1) Bachelors of Arts Degree in Heritage Studies at GMIT, Galway. I also participated in an EU Erasmus Exchange Program to the University of Zaragoza, Spain during 2010-2011.
I currently work as a Parliamentary Assistant to Deputy Tony McLoughlin TD and I co-own Lillies Bar in Sligo town in my spare time. I am also the youngest Peace Commissioner to have been appointed in Co. Sligo.
Why I am Running for Election:
As my political idol Michael Collins once said “I am on the side of those who do things, not on the side of those who say things”. I am a the Local Election candidate that will always talk Sligo up and always highlight the many positive things happening in our town.
I am seeking your No.1 support on May 24th, because I want to be a person who helps to make a difference in Sligo and because I believe that the people of Sligo now more than ever, want a fresh political thinking and a new voice to help represent them.
I decided to get involved in politics during 2008, as the effects of the economic recession began to have a negative effect on me and my family, who at the time were struggling to pay for my college education. I was not born into a large political family or family with wealth, nor was my decision to become active influenced in any way, shape or from by anyone other than myself and my experiences of living in recession era Ireland.
As an ordinary, working class, Sligo man who has had to work hard for everything I have achieved in life, I know from first hand experience, and through the experiences of those I have assisted, the real difficulties that arise in our day to day lives here in Sligo and the North West. I want to help address these problems.
Over the past four years, acting in a voluntary capacity as a community activist, I have been active on the ground in Sligo and Strandhill attempting to resolve a wide range of issues for people.
As someone with a solid working experience of national and European politics from working in Dáil Éireann and the European Parliament, I also understand the key social and infrastructural issues that are affecting Sligo and Strandhill at present and I am eager to roll up my sleeves and get to work putting my knowledge and skills to use in trying to help our community to prosper. Be it road or footpath repair, passports, housing applications, energy grants, public lighting provision, planning applications, social welfare, residents associations issues, broadband problems, medical cards, immigration, or any other non routine constituent query, I have a very strong record of delivery to date for the people who have contacted me
I now want to continue to delivering for the people of Sligo and to continue this good work as an elected member of Sligo County Council for Sligo and Strandhill.
However, I cant do this with out YOU!
This is why I am asking you for your No.1 support on the 24th May 2019.
It’s time for new blood, it’s time for change, it’s time for a fresh new voice on Sligo County Council.
I am a worker and I always try my best! I would greatly appreciate your No.1 Support on May 24th 2019.
